AFSA OUT AND ABOUT

By Wendy Lehman

Sustainable Living Festival, Federation Square Melbourne, Victoria, February 12- 14, 2016.

Early Autumn sunshine ensured the high attendance with both adding to the Festive atmosphere when the Green Market at the Festival’s Big Weekend was held along the banks of the Yarra River. Sixty stands showcased sustainable living options.

A team of AFSA National Committee members, aided by keen-to-join passers-by, were on hand to spread the Fair Food message by way of banner, flyer, the Fair Food documentary and good old-fashioned conversation.

Once again the weather was stunning and the atmosphere exciting, all adding to a fabulous opportunity to share information and foster interest in the AFSA goal among likeminded Fair Food advocates gathering to watch the multi-award winning film POLY FACES.

Set amidst the stunning Shenendoah Valley in Northern Virginia, Joel Salatin’s ‘Polyface Farm’ in Virginia uses no chemicals and feeds over 6,000 families, restaurants and cafes within a 3-hour foodshed of their farm.

Both proud AFSA members from the Bendigo region, co-director Lisa Heenan and her farm designer husband Darren Doherty, embraced the opportunity to showcase the work of Salatin, labeled “the world’s most innovative farmer” by Time Magazine.

But it wasn’t easy.

“As the problems of the world become more and more complex, the solutions become clear and simple. One Australian family spend their life savings and travel to the US, spending 4 years documenting a style of farming that will save humanity!”

Visit the film website polyfaces.com for screening information and DVD/ streaming purchase.
